Getting a Missouri Motorcycle Permit
Preamble
Riding 50cc mopeds for almost three years now, I wanted to upgrade to something with bigger displacement, like 125 or 150.
According to some research, in the state of Missouri, anything with a engine displacement greater than 50cc requires a class M license, or M endorsement, if you already have a F license. The motorcycle test is in two parts, just like the car test: a permit and a road test. The format of the permit test for motorcycles is very much the same as the car test, however, the questions are different. One other thing different is that one could take a MSF course instead of a road test as proof of proficiency on a motorcycle, which I think is a good thing since it takes forever to get an road test appointment. But, those classes are expensive.
I have been scouting the market for about 2 months now, and had locked my eyes on several scooters I may purchase. I listed some of my choices here, in case you want to get the same models:
50cc:
- Honda metropolitan
- Yamaha zuma
- Genuine Buddy 50cc (2-stroke)
- Yamaha C3/Vox
- Yamaha Yamahopper (it looks more like a bicycle)
- Honda Express SR
- Honda Elite/Spacy 50 (harder to find)
- Honda Spree
- Honda Elite/Spacy 80 (I think this one is perfect for me, two seater with plenty of space)
- Honda CT90 (Cool trail bike, I'd love to own one but they mostly have historical plates or lost titles)
- Honda Elite/Space 110
- Geniuine Buddy 125 (2-stroke also?)
- Yamaha Riva 125
Initially when I made my list it only consisted of 50cc scooters, which you could lawfully operate with a F driver's license with optional insurance. However, after doing some more research on Reddit, 50cc in STL traffic is probably not a good idea when 90% of the drivers are doing 50+ in 30 zones. 100cc bikes are not fast, but they could get me out of trouble faster than a 50cc does if I ever will be in that situation. Thus the motorcycle license post.
